A Creative Photoshoot
Photographers are creatives. Being a creative person, we have to have an outlet for our creativity. My latest fun shoot included my granddaughter Ava. Although she is only three, I believe she is also a creative. Together, Ava and I have imagination parties all the time, so when I asked if she wanted to be a part of this photo session she was one hundred percent on board. I am a believer in fostering the imagination of children. When children pretend to be someone else, perhaps a chef, they can change their current behaviors to mimic that of a chef, or if they imagine themselves as a superhero, they could pretend to be saving the world — all of these activities help in their social and emotional development by improving their self-esteem and giving them the confidence to become anything that they want. It also helps develop creative problem-solving skills to use later in life. Research has indicated that play brings a lot of benefits to children. Some examples include the growth of brain cells, higher concentration in academic tasks when given an adequate amount of playtime and improving language and creative problem-solving skills. Furthermore, it is said that children who engage in imaginary plays tend to have greater self-regulation skills and the ability to reason counterfactually.
One great thing about photographing these “play” imagination sessions, is that the child has something tangible to remember that time with. They have actual printed proof that they were “Queen of the Lions”.
During our play time, I told Ava that we were pretending that a lion was in the studio and she was petting it. Of course there was no “real lion” there, but in our minds we saw the lion and Ava was touching it and they were running together.
Keep an eye out for our next Studio “Play time”, and let me know if you and your child would like to create some wonderful imagination photos, maybe dragons or mermaids, if you can imagine it, we can create it.
