Do you have a “Real Kid”?

If you do read on to learn about this wonderful

fund raising event for “Our Sweet Katie”

Katie is my granddaughter. She turned 8 years old on March 26,2022. She has an older brother Derek, an older sister Ella, and a younger sister Amelia. Katie lives with her siblings, her mom Amanda and her dad Jacob in Marion, N.C.

Up until June 1,2022, Katie was your normal 8-year-old that loved doing arts and crafts, swimming, her dogs, and helping her mom bake cookies and cook dinner for the family.

On that fateful day, Amanda took Katie in to see the doctor because she had noticed a strange rash/bruising on Katie’s legs. After blood tests, the doctors discovered Katie had a dangerously low platelet count. For reference, normal is above 150,000, Katie’s was less than 7,000. There were several other abnormalities with Katie’s tests as well.

After several blood test, a bone marrow biopsy, platelets and blood transfusions, Katie has been diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia.

As everyone knows the normal family household medical expenses today can be enormous, but add a life-threatening event such as this, it becomes overwhelming. The plan is that Katie will be able to receive a bone marrow transplant from one of her three siblings. If she is a match and is able to undergo the transplant, the family will still be facing the expense of multiple hospital visits, blood tests, and due to the location of the medical facility that Katie is being sent to, the family will also incur the expense of lodging.

Black and white portrait of child

The Project

I am inviting parents with children ages 2 through 18 to experience a “Real Kid” photo session.

What is a “Real Kid”? I want the parents to allow the child to wear whatever they want to the session. If your child wants to wear their PJ’s, that’s ok, if you have a little GQ guy, that likes wearing bow ties with boots, Wonderful. I also want the kids to bring something they hold near and dear to their heart. It can be a well-loved teddy bear, or if they are heavy into sports, have them bring a piece of their sports equipment, maybe a football, or a tennis racket. These sessions are for them them and about them. You can also insure them that no one is going to make them smile. The word smile will not come out of my mouth. The kids will be able to relax, be themselves, and just have fun.

The sessions will last about 30 minutes. Every child will receive a beautiful 8x10 fine art print to display proudly in their home. About a week after your session you and your child will be able to pick your favorite either through a zoom call or you can come back into the studio.

Cost $35 ( this will go to Katie and her family to help with medical cost)

WHAT DOES THE $35 INCLUDE?

● 30 minute photo session

● IMAGE REVEAL SESSION: Where you will see your child’s images either at the studio or via zoom & select your gifted image/order your favorites 1-2 weeks after your photo shoot.

● PORTRAIT OF YOUR CHOICE: You will receive one 8x10 fine art matted portrait with matching high res digital image.(a $350 value). Additional photographs and products available for purchase

All profits from this event will go to Katie and her family

We will also be choosing 13 kids from these sessions to be featured in Our 2023 Calendar. Money collected from the calendar sales will also go to Katie and her family.

If you live around Marion, North Carolina I will be doing sessions at Hefner Baptist Church on August 12 & 13. You can book your session below.

Aplastic Anemia

  • What is Aplastic Anemia

Aplastic Anemia is a serious condition affecting the blood, where the bone marrow and stem cells do not produce enough blood cells. It is also called bone marrow failure and can happen suddenly (acute) or develop over a period of time (chronic).

Bone marrow is a substance found in the spongy center of bones and is where blood cells are formed. The bone marrow forms ‘stem cells’ which develop into any of the three types of blood cell – red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. Normally, the bone marrow controls the number of blood cells formed and released into the blood stream, so the body remains healthy. Too many or too few of any of the blood cells can cause problems. The number of blood cells is often referred to as a blood count and is often separated into the different types of blood cells

Red blood cells – about three million red blood cells are produced by the bone marrow every second. They carry a protein called ‘hemoglobin’ which carries oxygen to all parts of the body providing energy. The normal level of hemoglobin in a child’s blood varies with age but is around 10 to 12 grams per deciliter (g/dl). Another name for red blood cells is erythrocytes. White blood cells – these are larger than red blood cells and have different functions. The two main white blood cells are neutrophils – which fight bacterial infections – and lymphocytes – which help fight viruses like chicken pox and measles and other non-bacterial infections. The normal level of all white blood cells in a child’s blood is about six to 16 x 109 /l. The normal level of neutrophils is between 1.5 and 8.5 x 109 /l and lymphocytes between two and 9.5 x 109 /l. Platelets – these are much smaller than red blood cells and help the blood clot by sticking together. The normal level of platelets is between 150 and 400 x 109 /l.

In aplastic anemia, all types of blood cells are reduced. This is called pancytopenia – pan means all, cyto means cells and penia means few. A bone marrow sample, which would normally contain large numbers of immature blood cells, will contain very few such cells in a patient with aplastic anemia. A below normal number of red Ref: 2020F0588 © GOSH NHS Foundation Trust, January 2021 Page 2 of 5 cells is called anemia, reduced numbers of platelets is called thrombocytopenia and a reduced numbers of neutrophils is called neutropenia.

Aplastic anemia can be inherited. It can also develop for unknown reasons – this is called idiopathic aplastic anemia

Aplastic anemia is a rare disease, with about thirty to forty children diagnosed with it each year. It does not seem to affect one race more than another and affects males and females equally. It can affect anyone at any age but seems to occur most often in children and people over 60 years old.
